The 86th annual Pickerel Tournament was put on by the Algonac Lions Club July 3 to 7 in Algonac. On Saturday, the main parade, which was over an hour long, drew crowds. It included the Keystone Kops, Shriners, the Detroit Fire Department Clown Team, fife and drum groups, Rosie Riveters, local groups, emergency vehicles and more.

Marine City’s Riverbank Theatre to present ‘The Pin Up Girls’
Riverbank Theatre in Marine City will present “The Pin Up Girls” from July 12 to Aug. 11. The story is set in 2010 at a local VFW hall. Four performers, Leanne, Dana, Megan and Joel, introduce themselves as The Pin Up Girls. They explain that their fourth Pin-Up, Sharon, is unavailable tonight because she’s about to have her baby any moment now. But Joel, Leanne’s younger brother, has agreed to step in. Leanne explains how upset they are because the VFW hall is closing. After finding a room filled with letters to and from soldiers that go back to World War I, they decide to put on a show to celebrate these letters and the folks who fought.

Jon-Paul Battaglia, age 38, of Ray Township, MI died suddenly as a result of an accident Thursday, July 4, 2024. Jon-Paul was born February 13, 1986, in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. He is the son of Anthony and Deanna Lynn (Prell) Battaglia. He grew up in Warren, MI. The family moved to Imlay City in 2000. Jon-Paul was a graduate of Imlay City High School, Class of 2004. Jon-Paul married Nicolle Renae Lesley on July 7, 2007, in Warren, MI.

St. Clair College Names Vagnini Interim Men’s Soccer Head Coach
The St. Clair College Athletic Department has announced that Steve Vagnini will be assuming the role of Interim Head Coach for the Varsity Men’s Soccer program, effective immediately, while remaining the Women’s Soccer Head Coach for the Saints. Vagnini takes over for Mike Baraslievski who recently retired after 32 years at the helm for the Saints.

William Conner, age 82, of Imlay City, MI, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at his home. William Douglas Conner was born March 25, 1942m in Lum, MI. He is the son of the late Harmon and the late Annabell (Schwerin) Conner. William grew up in the Lum and North Branch, MI areas. He attended North Branch High School. William married Judith “Judy” Roberts on October 27, 1962m in Lapeer, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy, on September 14, 2015.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — It was a day that Trevor McKinney will look back on and wonder, ‘What could have been?’ But despite several hiccups, the Tackle Warehouse Elite Qualifier pro managed to land 22 pounds, 3 ounces on Day 2 of the St. Croix Bassmaster Open at Lake St. Clair presented by SEVIIN to retain his lead with a two-day total of 49-15. The Noble, Ill., native took the Day 1 lead with the tournament’s biggest bag, a 27-12 limit of smallmouth that gave him a 3-pound advantage over the field. That lead has now shrunk to 11 ounces over Jay Przekurat and Aaron Jagdfeld, who both have a two-day total of 49-4.

World War II reenactors return to Chesterfield Township this weekend
World War II history will be brought to life this weekend in Chesterfield Township. A reenactment will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Chesterfield Township Historical Village. The theme this year is Operation Cobra, which took place July 25 to 31, 1944, the breakout of Normandy during World War II. A smaller part of Operation Overload, Cobra took place seven weeks after D-Day.
