Seattle city leaders focus on drug and crime “hot spots”
Advocates say prioritizing geography over root causes may be misplaced. A new report published on July 9 by the Seattle City Auditor has brought fresh attention to a handful of city blocks considered “hot spots” for controlled substance use and crimes against persons. These 10 street segments had a combination of at least 100 such reports in the 13-month period between July 2022 and July 2023. The concerns come amid a sharp rise of drug overdoses in recent years with the popularization of the potent synthetic opioid fentanyl.

Teen ‘orchestrated’ Kent robbery that led to 13-year-old’s death, charges say
An 18-year-old was charged in King County Superior Court in connection to a shooting that killed a 13-year-old boy near Turnkey Park in Kent last week. Prosecutors say Faysal Abdullahi, of Kent, “orchestrated” an armed robbery that led to gunfire that killed the 13-year-old, who the King County Medical Examiner’s Office identifies as Matthew Stavkoviy. Abdullahi was charged on Tuesday with first-degree murder and robbery.
County jail to accept misdemeanor offenders busted in downtown Seattle
The King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention (DAJD) agreed to begin booking people arrested for all misdemeanors in downtown Seattle.<\p> It was a case of the squeaky wheel getting the grease, with bookings cleared to begin Wednesday afternoon, hours after the City Council Public Safety Committee meeting where residents and business owners implored council members to do something about untenable conditions stemming from violent crimes, drug dealing and drug use.<\p>
