Two men killed in Long Island plane crash at MacArthur Airport identified. What we know

The Suffolk County Police Department identified the two people who were killed in a Long Island plane crash Monday evening shortly after departing from Long Island MacArthur Airport .

Pilot Christopher Kucera, 46, of Fredericksburg, Virginia and passenger Zachary Hatcher, 43, of King George, Virginia were pronounced dead at the scene, the police department said.

A single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza A36, which was registered to Kucera since August 2009, crashed near the end of runway 6 at MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma at 6:14 p.m. Monday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and an airport representative. The plane attempted to take off from the runway but crashed while attempting to return to the same runway, the Suffolk County Police Department says.

What we know about the crash investigation

The cause of the crash is unknown, according to the FAA's preliminary accident/incident report . The plane arrived in New York from Provincetown, Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon.

Airport Fire Rescue responded to the crash and the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

Runway 6 is closed until the NTSB completes their investigation, the airport said, and there have been some delays and cancellations due to the closure.
