KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — A Virginia man has been arrested by Kinston police after they said he stole a vehicle and then was involved in a chase while trying to escape.

Officers received information on June 29 of a vehicle being driven with a stolen license plate in the area of West King Street and South Herritage Street. They attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the driver took off and tried to flee from officers. A chase ensued, which led to the driver crashing into a utility pole in the 300 block of West Washington Avenue.

Officials said the driver jumped from the vehicle and tried to run away. A member of the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office and an NC State Highway Patrol trooper offered assistance. A perimeter was set up and a K-9 unit found Stephan Jones, 18, of Norfolk, Va., hiding in some bushes in the 300 block of Atlantic Avenue.

Officers found the vehicle had been reported stolen from Virginia. Jones was arrested and charged with the following:

    • Felony Flee to Elude
    • Resisting Public Officer
    • Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle
    • Possession With Intent to Sell/Deliver Schedule VI
    • Possession of Stolen Goods
    • Financial Card Theft (4 Counts)
    • Hit & Run
    • No Operator License
