KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — Different law enforcement agencies got together Tuesday at Lenoir Community College for a training course called “Surviving the First Three Seconds.”

The course focuses on teaching officers verbal and nonverbal cues of a person that may become assaultive, may have a mental issue or a medical issue.

Some local agencies attending the training included the Kinston Police Department, Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office and Military Police.

“They’re learning how to recognize signs of people who may be in distress, understand how to either de-escalate the situation without necessarily putting handcuffs on someone,” said Lenoir Community College Director of Public Safety, Daniel McLawhorn.

The training will continue Wednesday and LCC leaders said they plan to host the training again in the fall.
