Freeride Athletes Face Off on the Cirque at Kirkwood

The final stop of the grueling North American Freeride World Tour Challenger Series is set to take place today at Kirkwood.

The venue at Kirkwood, The Cirque, is a legendary face that has seen some fireworks from the original days of the Freeskiing World Tour to the Freeride World Tour and now to the Challenger Series.

It’s now permanently closed to the public, so that gives you an idea of how gnarly it is.

This is the athletes’ last chance to secure their spot on the 2024/2025 Freeride World Tour. With massive cliffs and big mountain lines, it’s sure to be a carcass huck. In a sport full of uncertainty, they will certainly be going for broke.

With some hometown advantage, there’s a few Tahoe athletes who are currently sitting in good position to qualify for the tour.

On the men’s ski side, Reno native, Tyler Curle, is currently in qualifying position at fourth place. He’ll just need to rock a solid run to hold his spot.

Another Reno native, Colton Shaff, who was on the tour earlier this year who now has to fight for his spot back, is sitting tied in seventh. He’ll need a top three run at least to secure his spot.

The women’s ski side has Truckee sisters Mia and Britta Winans both in great position after they both finished on the podium in Silverton. Britta is currently the leader while Mia sits in sixth.

Kirkwood hometown hero, Molly Armanino, is also in the running to get back on the tour. She’s a tough skier who is always progressing the sport with her style and line choice.

As a fan, we love to see these athletes going big, but we hope to see everyone get down the mountain safely today.
