LOUISIANA ( KLFY ) — As the November election approaches, the importance of poll workers, also called election workers and poll commissioners, becomes increasingly crucial. The Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office says they’re always looking to hire.

The Director of Communications, Joel Watson, told News 10 that most of their election poll workers are more advanced in terms of age. Therefore, they always seek people to help at polling locations, especially younger people.

Watson believes Louisiana will be prepared for the upcoming November presidential election, which is anticipated to draw a sizable voter turnout.

“I think we’re going to have the folks we need but we always could use more help for big elections and especially small elections. Small elections are difficult to recruit people for,” Watson said.

Watson said he wouldn’t say the state has a shortage of poll workers. However, the recruitment window is always open.

“While I wouldn’t say that we are in any sort of shortage, we always could use more, and we’re always looking for more folks to sign up,” Watson said.

Election workers in high demand are younger people.

“Again, most of our poll workers are a little older and are going to be retiring soon from being poll workers. We certainly could use some other folks to step in and take up that mantle,” Watson said.

Election workers check ID’s, assist with voting equipment and questions from voters.

“They help ensure that everything is delivered to the clerk of court’s office if it’s election day and talk to the Registrar’s Office. There’s a lot that goes into it but it’s very rewarding work. It’s a chance to see how our elections work up close and to see how we keep our elections safe,” he said.
