IBERIA PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — An Iberia Parish School Board member claims his rights are being violated when his public records request for public phone records of the Iberia Parish Assessor was denied.

School board member Raymond “Shoe-Do” Lewis claims Parish Assessor Ashlie M. Spiker is using her work phone as a means to campaign for the upcoming election.

“The law does not allow her to do any political activities from the taxpayers phone, and that’s wrong,” Lewis said.

In a statement, Spiker said the information Lewis requested is not information her office is required to keep.

“I consulted with our attorney, who confirmed that the requested information is not a set of records we are required to keep. We complied with his request by providing an immediate response outlining this information,” she said.

Lewis says Spiker’s office should go to the service provider and give him the records he is looking for which he has not been able to receive.

“I’m still waiting on information I filed one public record requests. I filed a second on the very next day. Now it’s in the hands of the 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office Bo Duhe,” Lewis said.

Duhe said the law does not require the Assessor’s Office to provide the records, unless they are in possession of what Lewis is looking for. Duhe also said his office has no affirmative obligation to investigate the matter, but Lewis has the right to file a petition against the Assessor’s Office if he feels it is necessary.
