IBERIA PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — The man who was taken into custody after a deadly standoff in Jeanerette late July is set to be arraigned on the charges for which he was originally sought on warrants.

According to court records, Nyjal Hurst will be arraigned Friday, Aug. 30, on charges of home invasion, possession of firearm or carrying concealed weapon by a convicted felon and three counts of aggravated second-degree battery.

Online court records show that those charges are in connection with incidents that occurred in March 2023, May 27, 2024, and July 5, 2024.

Authorities said the standoff that occurred in late July began when a city marshal attempted to serve Hurst an arrest warrants at a home on Martin Luther King Drive in Jeanerette.

The hours-long standoff resulted in the death of Sr. Cpl. Segus R. Jolivette , 35, of the Lafayette Police Department.

Louisiana State Trooper Peggy Bourque said earlier this month that more than numerous witnesses have been interviewed in the investigation surrounding Jolivette’s death. Bourque said State Police want to make sure they get the investigation right.

“Investigators are diligently working to examine all evidence and facts of the incident to ensure a thorough and precise investigation,” Bourque said.
