LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY ) — The suspect in the Jeanerette standoff that ended with the fatal shooting of Lafayette Sr. Cpl. Segus Jolivette has been arraigned on the charges for which he was being served, which sparked the incident.

Nyjal Hurst, 31, has pleaded not guilty to the warrant charges of home invasion, aggravated second-degree battery, possession of firearm or carrying concealed weapon by convicted felon and two counts of aggravated second-degree battery.

Online court records show that those charges are in connection with incidents that occurred in March 2023, May 27, 2024 and July 5, 2024. Hurst has yet to be charged with anything related to the standoff itself.

Authorities said the incident began when the Jeanerette City Marshal attempted to serve Hurst an arrest warrant at a home in the 2500 block of Martin Luther King Drive in Jeanerette.

Hursts’s trial date is set for Oct. 21.
