ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — In a time of rising costs and families struggling to make ends meet, something as simple as keeping the lights on can be a challenge from time to time. St. Landry Parish has introduced the Energy Assistance Program to lend a helping hand.
Parish President Jessie Bellard emphasizes that the program is only meant to help residents when needed.
“But it’s not made for somebody to be dependent on it. This is made for people to get the help as needed. It’s just to help you get on your feet to get to the next level in life,” Bellard said.
Bellard said the parish receives just over $1 million dollars each year to give to residents for energy assistance on a first come, first serve basis.
Charter bus catches fire on I-10 Monday evening Applicants must meet criteria based on income, the need, and in some cases age, as there are times the assistance will specifically be given to the elderly.
Bellard said his staff is also taking steps to reach those who need it by scheduling days to be in specific areas of the parish to accept applications.
“Because most of the people who need this energy assistance really can’t get around like they need to. So why not go meet them where they’re from?” Bellard said.
While many people struggle to make ends meet, Bellard said the program not only helps families make it through a difficult month, but also opens the door for other parish programs to get their finances in check.

So, we can help them, and we have other people on staff that help and get them in the right direction. It helps the community, and it shows them that we have other programs that’s good for them,” Bellard said.
Energy Assistance Program can be called at 337-443-6233. Eunice residents can call 337-284-0778 at the beginning of each month. However, callers can only receive that funding twice per year to ensure the most people can get their help.
