St. Landry Parish, La. ( KLFY ) — Noamie Aymond said her mother, Mary Aggison, was paralyzed from the stomach down after a tree fell on her during a storm. Aggison died from her injuries on Aug. 29.

Aymond, of Lafayette, said her mother was injured on April 10 while in a car line at the Yambilee building in Opelousas for commodities. While in line that morning, the wind suddenly picked up and rain started to come down. That’s when a tree near the building snapped and fell onto Aggison’s car.

According to the National Weather Service, a storm system that April day resulted in at least a dozen tornadoes that swept across Louisiana and Mississippi.

Aggison was hospitalized for five months and underwent several surgeries before she died.

Aymond said she spoke with lawyers about taking possible action against the parish for the accident, but that the lawyers told her that the parish could not be held accountable because the tree was not old.

“When they visited the tree, unfortunately, they already had started cleaning up everything, so by the time they did go there, they said the tree was not an old tree. It was basically a fresh tree and they couldn’t be held accountable,” Aymond said.

While she still feels the parish should be held accountable, Aymond feels even worse to know she has to live the rest of her life without her mom.

Aymond said she shares a strong resemblance toher mother.

“Every time everybody looks at me, they looking at her. I was her twin. I was her split image,” Aymond said. “I have to live with that for the rest of my life, seeing me and seeing my momma.”

St. Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard provided the following statement:

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Aggison and Aymond families during this incredibly difficult time. We urge everyone to keep her family in your hearts offering support and prayers in the days to come”.
