SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) — The Tom Green County Hunger Coalition will host a photo gallery event at the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark on Aug. 27 to raise awareness about hunger in the community.

The event, hosted as part of the coalition’s “Hunger Happens Here” campaign , will take place in the Quartermaster Building from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The viewing will have refreshments, and participants can come and go as they’d like.

During the showing, attendees can view a selection of images captured by student photographers that are meant to provide viewers with a glimpse of “what hunger looks like in our community.”

“There’s pictures — there’s an empty refrigerator, a sparse refrigerator, and they’re telling their story,” Betty Teston, TGCHC member and program specialist at Baylor University’s Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty, said. “We have about 18 or 19 canvas, pretty large pictures … and there’s a little caption beside each one that tells what the person saw and what hunger is to them in the community here.”

Teston hopes that the event will spread awareness about the hunger needs that are being felt in Tom Green County and encourage citizens to take action.

“That’s, in a nutshell, what the whole gist is, just to make people aware of what’s going on here in our community, that there are real people experiencing hunger,” Teston said. “I think when people see the photos, hopefully they’ll be impacted to see, ‘Wow, we do need to address this issue in our community and make people aware of the resources!'”

According to the coalition’s website , over 15,000 people in Tom Green County are food insecure. The USDA defines food insecurity as “a household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food.”
