    1 dead after minivan crashes into nursing home in Knoxville

    KNOXVILLE, Iowa — One person is dead after a minivan crashed into a nursing home in Knoxville Monday afternoon.

    At around 3:02 p.m. the Knoxville Fire Department responded to a report of a car that had crashed into Accura HealthCare of Knoxville, a nursing home facility, in the 600 block of North 7th Street.

    According to the Knoxville Police Department, when emergency crews arrived on scene they found a minivan had crashed through the building and into a resident’s room. The resident was also found stuck and needed to be extracted. The resident’s condition is not known at this time.

    One person was taken to a Des Moines hospital via air ambulance and another individual was taken to Knoxville Hospital, but died from their injuries, police said. Their names have not been released.

    The building was significantly damaged and was evacuated while temporary repairs were completed.

    No information about what led to the crash has been released.

    The fire and police departments were assisted by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Accura staff, Knoxville Hospital, Knoxville Rural Fire Department, Indiana Township Fire Department, Pella EMS, Marion County Emergency Management, Iowa State Patrol, and Knoxville Community School District.
