Alcoa's winningest high school football coach to be inducted into The National High School Hall of Fame
ALCOA, Tenn. — Gary Rankin, Alcoa's winningest football coach is being inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame on Monday night. Rankin coached the Alcoa Tornadoes from 2006 to 2022. Rankin brought home 13 state titles during his 16-season run with the team, which started in 2006.
Bolivar Grad Wins Fulbright Award
Steve Mahometano of Bolivar is one of eleven UT-Knoxville students who have been offered Fulbright scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year. Four students were named alternates. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is one of the most prestigious international exchange programs in the world. Established in 1946, it offers opportunities to passionate and accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students and young professionals in partnership with more than 140 countries worldwide. The program provides awards to about 8,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists and professionals each year, giving them the opportunity to expand their perspectives through academic and professional advancement and cross-cultural dialogue. As they carry out their grant-funded work, students work with, live with and learn from the people of their assigned host country. Mahometano graduated in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in honors neuroscience and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. He will be traveling to Taiwan to work as an English teaching assistant. “As a first-generation immigrant from Manila, Philippines, I am grateful to have benefited from language-cultural programs such as the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program before immigrating to the U.S. as a child,” said Mahometano. “I am pursuing the Taiwan ETA Program because it furthers my goal of refining my interdisciplinary and multicultural competencies and because I want to engage with neuroscience, psychology and medicine in a global context.”
Shoes for School offers new shoes, school supplies and resources for students and their families
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Shoes for School is around a month away, kicking off on Aug. 3, and there are big changes coming. It will be held in a new location and offer new kinds of services and resources. It's hosted by the Knoxville Area Urban League and aims to make sure students have their back-to-school basics and are prepared for the school year.

The wife of former Anderson County Schools principal Dan Jenkins, Carrie Jenkins has resigned from her position as head guidance counselor of Clinton High School. Carrie Jenkins is married to Dan Jenkins, former Clinton High School principal who resigned in April during a grade changing scandal at the school. Carrie was also suspended pending an investigation, and the school’s contract with head football coach Darrell Keith was not renewed.
Roane State celebrates completing the frame of new health science facility
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Roane State Community College celebrated a milestone on Tuesday, marking progress made on the construction of its new health science facility. The new Knox Regional Health Science Education Center will be located on Sherrill Boulevard in Knoxville, and Roane State said it recently installed the final beam of the building's frame. Crews hoisted the last beam and secured it in place on Tuesday.
