KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ( WATE ) — Five juveniles were treated for “varying severity of burns” on the Fourth of July, according to the Knoxville Police Department, after a car fire due to what investigators believe was caused by shooting fireworks.

KPD spokesperson Scott Erland said Friday morning that officers responded to the area of Gloria Garner and New York Avenue at around 10 p.m. Thursday regarding a car that was fully engulfed in flames. Knoxville Fire crews were already at the scene when KPD officers arrived.

“It appears that a group of juveniles who were shooting fireworks from the car inadvertently caught it on fire,” Erland stated in an email to WATE 6 News. “All five juveniles were treated at the UT Medical Center for varying severity of burns.”

    No other injuries were reported.
