KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — North Peters Road in West Knoxville reopened on Tuesday after a hazmat incident forced it to close on Monday.

The road and part of Kingston Pike were forced to close Monday due to a leaking tractor-trailer. The Knoxville Fire Department said the truck spilled hydrochloric acid in the roadway.

Kingston Pike between Cedar Bluff and Ebenezer reopened around 5:30 p.m. Monday after being closed for several hours.

KFD spokesperson Mark Wilbanks said the Regions Bank was the only business that was evacuated. People had been asked to stay away while crews cleared the scene. Several agencies including the Tennessee Highway Patrol, AMR, and the city’s Storm Water Department responded to the area.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, hydrochloric acid “is corrosive to the eyes, skin, and mucous membranes.” Exposure can lead to eye, nose, and respiratory tract irritation.
