NFL Hall of Famer says Tennessee would've been the best fit for his college career in retrospect

An NFL Hall of Famer said this week that, in retrospect, the Tennessee Vols probably would've been the best fit for his collegiate career.

Three-time Super Bowl winner Troy Aikman joined The Ryan Russillo podcast this week and he detailed his college recruitment and suggested that playing for Johnny Majors in the 1980s would've been the best path for his college career.

“I wasn’t highly recruited,” explained Aikman. “Jimmy Johnson was at Oklahoma State when I was coming out of high school. Barry Switzer, of course, [was] at Oklahoma. I had also visited the University of Tennessee and Missouri, those were my trips. And I was 17 years old when I came out of high school. And I just really was not prepared to leave too far from home."

“Looking back on it, Tennessee probably would’ve been the best fit," continued Aikman. "Johnny Majors was the head coach there at the time. It would’ve been a great atmosphere. I didn’t know much about Tennessee football at that point in my life, but [it] would’ve been amazing.”

Aikman, after declining a baseball contract from the New York Mets, signed with Oklahoma out of high school. He spent two seasons with the Sooners before transferring to UCLA (back when you had to sit out a season).

Things worked out just fine for Aikman. He earned a national championship ring at Oklahoma and he later won the Davey O'Brien Award at UCLA (awarded to the top collegiate quarterback). Aikman was then the No. 1 overall selection in the 1989 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He would lead the franchise to three Super Bowls. Aikman was also a six-time Pro Bowler and the MVP of Super Bowl XXVII.

As for Tennessee, the 1985 season, without Aikman under center, provided one of the greatest moments in Vols history -- the Sugar Bowl win against the Miami Hurricanes in New Orleans.

I don't think either side would actually go back and change history, but it's still interesting to hear that an Oklahoma/Dallas guy like Aikman thinks that playing for the Volunteers would've been "amazing".
