Knox County Schools' first single-gender charter school has welcomed its first students. Knoxville Preparatory School , or Knox Prep, is in session.

The all-boys Knox Prep is housed in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tennessee Valley site at 967 Irwin St. and comes from the organization that runs the charter school Chattanooga Prep.

The school is starting with 105 sixth graders, administrators told Knox News. It's expected to reach full capacity of 700 students by the 2030-2031 school year. A new sixth grade class will be added each year as the preceding class advances until it eventually serves as a middle and high school.

The school is fully staffed with seven teachers, Brad Scott, chief executive officer of Chattanooga Prep, told Knox News.

Janet Crenshaw is Knox Prep's principal. Crenshaw is a 2009 graduate of Emory University and has a master's degree in educational leadership from Columbia University. She has worked for nine years with IDEA Public Schools , a national network of charter schools.
