FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A former Razorback rugby player is on a mission to spread her passion for the sport throughout the region.

Rugby is rapidly growing in popularity across the United States, according to Global Sport Matters .

Cristy Miner has taken this momentum to heart, establishing the Fort Smith Renegades rugby team this past year and now working to help launch a new team in Northwest Arkansas.

Miner’s drive to cultivate a rugby culture in the region began after her children left for college.

“We are like a family. All the guys have gotten close, especially when we started off the season,” Miner said.

The Fort Smith Renegades operate as a nonprofit organization, reflecting Miner’s commitment to community and development.

The team is gearing up for its upcoming season, and Miner is also laying the groundwork for the Northwest Arkansas team, which aims further to boost the sport’s presence in the area.

Paul Kapustynski, one of the head coaches for the Fort Smith Renegades, emphasized the team’s commitment to growth and the challenges they face.

“We have two main obstacles: recruiting more players and securing funds. Rugby requires substantial resources for travel, equipment, and training, and we are constantly seeking donations and support.”

The Renegades are actively recruiting new players and seeking financial contributions to support their efforts. The team’s success in overcoming these hurdles is crucial to its continued development and impact on the local rugby scene.
