GARFIELD, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A new school has opened in Garfield following the permanent closure of the town’s elementary school last year.

The new Garfield Scholars Academy is now operational, using the First Baptist Church as its campus.

As a public charter school adhering to state standards, it will place an emphasis on economics and agriculture, reflecting the significant number of local families involved in these fields.

“We saw a need with the children to learn how to process their own food, to grow their own food and how to do things like that,” Cheryl Harrison, Director of Garfield Scholar Academy said. “Then [they learn] how to take it to the market and actually work in the economy.”
