Rogers Animal Shelter experiences overflow following tornado

ROGERS, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — An animal shelter in Rogers has more than 70 furry friends ready for adoption, and some of the dogs are even doubled up in their kennels.

The Rogers Animal Shelter on West Oak Street next to the Rogers Fire Department training center had damage to the front of the building done by the Memorial Day tornadoes. The kennels that were once home to dogs waiting to be adopted were also damaged.

Matthew Colston with the Rogers Animal Shelter said the shelter has had many animals in cages since those tornadoes.

“When the tornado hit, it took out a large section of our kennels. We got full immediately. Any of the open kennels are gone, so we had to move dogs around, and we’re a packed house right now,” Colston said.

The shelter is now trying to find a way to get dozens of furry friends a new home.

“Right now our adoptions are just $10 until the end of the year, and that includes the spay or neuter, and any of the vaccinations or medications while they are here,” Colston said.

Since the damage, the shelter hasn’t had the time to repair.

“It took out so much kennel space, and it’s going to be a little while before we’ll be able to get that replaced,” Colston said. “With the condition that the shelter is, we’ve got space for the animals that we have and hopefully, we can get a few more adopted out to where we can make a little bit more space.”

The Rogers Animal Shelter said it is ready for any dog to be adopted.
