Poteau High School head football coach resigns

POTEAU, Okla. (KNWA/KFTA) — Poteau High School announced on August 26 that its head football coach and athletic director resigned days before the team was to begin its season against Booneville.

According to a press release from the school, Greg Werner informed the superintendent Scott Kempenich of the decision to resign effective immediately.

Werner is an Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee who led the Pirates to a 4A state championship in 2019.

The release says assistant football coach Mike Odom accepted the interim head football coach role. Odom has been with the school’s football program for 17 years and has been a defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the past eight years.

Assistant athletic director Eric Hackler will take over the athletic director position.

Dean of Students Casey Hemphill will expand his role with the high school administration team, serving as an assistant principal for part of the day.

The release says the school district is working to ensure a smooth transition, and that the upcoming football season will proceed as planned.

“Pirate athletic programs are built on a strong foundation of pride and excellence, and that will not change,” the release says.

The superintendent says anyone with questions can reach out to him.

“We understand that transitions like these can raise questions, and we are here to support you,” the release says.
