FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The city of Fayetteville plans to close one block of North Street on Sept. 3 from N. College Avenue to N. Washington Avenue for construction.

According to a press release, the city expects the section to be closed for four weeks. Inclement weather or unforeseen conditions could delay or extend the work time.

Westbound traffic on North Street will be detoured to College Avenue through N. Waneetah Avenue and E. Oakwood Street. Traffic from College Avenue will be detoured to North Street through Oakwood and Waneetah Avenue.

Fayetteville’s North Street Corridor project construction begins

The release says the work on North Street is a continuation of the first phase of the North Street Corridor project which will bring sidewalk and street improvements.

The city has already installed a dedicated turning lane on North Street at the College Avenue intersection for traffic heading south and a crosswalk on the south side of the intersection and new traffic signals.

Crews will remove existing unsuitable soils and replace them with a more stable base and concrete pavement section. The entrance to Washington Avenue from North Street will be closed for waterline work. The city says once the work is finished, crews will install a thin overlay of asphalt from College Avenue to Washington Avenue.

The improvements will include sidewalks, shared-use paved trails, trees, lighting and intersection improvements.
