    Cornerstone Apartments fire, more than 60 displaced

    CHANUTE, Kan. (KOAM) — A devastating apartment building fire early Thursday morning tore through 24 apartments on West 4th. Sources tell us more than 60 people are displaced, looking for a new place to live.

    One person died and another rushed critical to a regional burn unit. Numerous others suffered minor injuries.

    The Kansas Fire Marshal, ATF, Neosho County Sheriffs Office, and Sedgwick County Fire District 1 together are investigating the fire.

    FINANCIAL DONATIONS FOR VICTIMS

    The community is responding to assist the families who lost everything. Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce explain details on monetary donation. “The Chanute Community Foundation to support the needs of the Cornerstone residents. All donations will stay local.”

    All funds will go directly to the residents displaced by the fire through vouchers, gift cards and gift certificates.

    Donations to CCF are tax deductible. Receipts can be issued. Monetary Contributions can be dropped off at:

    1. Commercial Bank, 1315 S. Santa Fe
    2. Chanute Area Chamber, 21 N. Lincoln
    3. Home Savings Bank, 214 N. Lincoln
    4. Emprise Bank, 17 S. Lincoln

    THE RED CROSS OF KANSAS

    The Red Cross of Kansas states if there are some affected by the Cornerstone Apts fire that were not able to meet in person they should call 1-800 RED CROSS for assistance.

    Other inquiries can be directed to Neosho County Emergency Management .

    DONATION OF CLOTHING, HOUSEHOLD ITEMS

    This is being organized locally and vouchers are available for victims.

    We do not need anymore clothing donations at this time ,” one can reach out to Cora Finely at Consignment Affordable Style . She has set up the donations at the Rec Center. They received so many donations the first day they are overwhelmed and not accepting more.

    K9 Benny responds to assist at Cornerstone Apts for Fire Investigation. K9 Benny is an Accelerant Detection Canine — CHANUTE, Kan. — “Fire Investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), along with the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office (KSFM), requested the assistance of Sedgwick County Fire District 1 (SCFD) Accelerant Detection Canine team to help with the scene examination of a fatal fire in Chanute Kansas.
