JOPLIN, Mo. (KOAM) -- A Joplin High School student has been named one of the 15 students statewide to win the 2024 Missouri Citizenship Award.

According to Joplin High School, the award recognizes high school students who have demonstrated exceptional knowledge of government and citizenship principles through their academic achievements, involvement in extracurricular activities, and dedication to serving the community. Senior Abigail Eckert from Joplin High School is a recipient.

"Abigail really does exemplify what it means to serve one's community," said JHS assistant principal Holly Yust. "She is involved in so many important activities here at school and around Joplin. We're grateful for her leadership and service at JHS!"

JHS says Abigail currently serves as Student Body President at the high school, and volunteers with Key Club, the Philanthropic Society, National Honor Society, Peer Buddies, and Miracle League. She has also served as the Student Advisor to the Joplin Schools Board of Education, the Leadership Pillar Chair for the National Honor Society, the Public Relations Officer for Science National Honor Society, and the Secretary and Vice President of DECA and FBLA.
