Mom says at-home treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy boosted daughter’s care

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) – August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy awareness month, and the disease’s first ever at-home treatment is having a major impact.

SMA is a rare nerve disorder that affects motor functions such as breathing, swallowing and walking. Until recently, there were no approved oral treatments for SMA. Now there’s Evrysdi.

Alyssa Ahrens of Estacada joined KOIN 6’s AM Extra to discuss her daughter Lily Jane, one of the patients undergoing this novel treatment.
