Heat advisory issued for sweltering Labor Day weekend in Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the eastern slopes of the Oregon Cascades and the Ochoco-John Day Highlands as highs in the mid 90s and low 100s will be possible through the Labor Day weekend.

The heat will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, the National Weather Service warns. People are advised to take precautions before enjoying outdoor activities during the holiday weekend.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the NWS advisory states. “Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.”

The Willamette Valley is also forecast for a hot holiday weekend . Temperatures are likely to reach the mid-to-upper 90s degrees in the Willamette Valley on Friday and Saturday afternoon. Daytime highs are expected to linger in the 80s and low 90s into next week.

Eastern Oregon and Southwest Washington could see a chance for thunderstorms on Labor Day. The warm, stormy weather is also capable of producing 25 to 35 mph winds on Monday in the Eastern Columbia River Gorge and the Kittitas and Yakima valleys.
