PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) – Monday marked a new dawn for hundreds of kids in the Beaverton School District as they woke up and kicked off their first day back to school a bit earlier than in the past.

Students at McKinley Elementary School and several other early start elementary schools have a new start time that begins their days at 7:45 a.m. for the 2024-25 school year. Late start elementary schools will begin at 8:15.

The district launched new start times for their schools, starting elementary classes a bit earlier while middle school classes begin at 9:30 a.m. and high school classes begin at 8:45 a.m.

A full list of the district’s start time schedule is available on the Beaverton School District website .

Officials say they made the decision based on research that indicated adolescents are biologically wired to stay up later than younger children, so having to get up early for school results in them being chronically short on sleep.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, insufficient sleep in adolescents is a public health issue that impacts well-being, safety and academic success.

This fall, California became the first state to mandate later start times for secondary students in public schools.

On Monday, McKinley Elementary School also kicked off a new Spanish dual language preschool program — part of the district’s larger initiative to make a dual language education eventually available to all.

“It’s a skill I wish I had, and its a skill in navigating a multilingual world,” Principal Brian Curl said. “All human beings — adults and children – learn contextually. We make meaning of new information with the information we have. So for our students who are English Language Learners, their first language is not English and we use their home language to build context into home language and ultimately proficiency in English as they progress from Pre-K to 5th grade in McKinley.”
