Tuesday, August 27 forecast: Summer strikes back

Yesterday was a hot day. At 95°, it was our hottest day since early August. Today will also be hot and humid with the most intense heat today located across Central Missouri and points northeastward.

Rain chances today will be tricky to determine. There is some guidance that suggests a few spotty showers in Southern Missouri this morning ahead of a boundary moving in from the northwest. However, this is a VERY LOW chance. Additional spotty showers or storms are possible in Central Missouri this evening but those chances too are low.

We’ll remain in “wash and repeat” mode through Wednesday and Thursday. The nights will be muggy and warm with hot and humid afternoons. A few spotty showers and thunderstorms will be possible from time to time. Given the high heat and moisture for popup storms to work with there is a marginal risk (1/5) for a stronger storm on Wednesday.

Rain chances will perk up by Friday as a trough amplifies across the East. A series of cold fronts will drop into the area Friday through Sunday. This will boost rain chances, especially on Friday. The risk for rain will tend to shift further south on Saturday and Sunday as drier air tries to build in from the north. Temperatures will be noticeably cooler with highs in the mid-80s.

Low humidity and mild air will overspread the area by Labor Day. It looks like we’re in for milder-than-normal conditions for the first week of September.
