When you think of September, pumpkin spice and changing leaves likely come to mind. When it comes to September weather in the Ozarks, it can run the gamut, but one thing we don’t see a lot of is clouds.

Dr. Brian Brettschneider, a climatologist located in Alaska, shared a graphic on September cloud climatology. He ranked the areas from cloudiest to least cloudy, and much of the country fell under the “least cloudy” criteria. From California, through the Rocky Mountains, into the Plains, and into Pennsylvania, September is the month with the least amount of cloud cover. While much of the country is enjoying blue skies, the Sunshine State isn’t so sunny. Florida is the cloudiest in September.

While we don’t see many cloudy days in September, we do see a fair amount of rain. September is the third rainiest month of the year in the Ozarks, averaging 4.61″ in Springfield.

On average, May is the rainiest month of the year in Springfield, while January is the driest month, averaging 2.47″ of rainfall. February is not far behind with only 2.52″ of rain.
