Square Enix has announced that its Splatoon-like flopped PS5, PS4 exclusive will be going free-to-play. You’d be forgiven for forgetting that Foamstars exists despite its launch only earlier this year as part of February 2024’s PS Plus monthly lineup. In March, Foamstars became available for purchase via the PS Store, priced at $29.99.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Final Fantasy 14's Naoki Yoshida discussed Square Enix's desire to strengthen its relationship with Xbox players following its successful launch on Xbox consoles.

The director of Final Fantasy 14, Naoki Yoshida, declares, "We would like to release more Square Enix games on Xbox, and there WILL be more of our titles released on Xbox"

When Square Enix originally released Foamstars, the foam-shooting, Splatoon-like shooter was free for PS Plus subscribers to claim that month. Other than that, Foamstars has mysteriously held on to a $29.99 box fee. This was despite the game only being available on PlayStation 4 and 5 and a cash shop model that was literally designed in the same model as every other free-to-play game you've ever seen.
