By Kristy Tallman ROSEBURG, Ore. — The Douglas County Museum of History and Natural History, nestled in the heart of a natural resource-based economy, is extending its hours of operation to be open every day of the week from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, officials announced Monday. Starting May 13, 2024, visitors can immerse themselves in the rich history and ecological diversity of Douglas County, Oregon, by exploring the museum's extensive collection, which includes over 7,500 preserved items showcasing the region's mining, fishing, farming, and timber industries. For over 50 years, the museum has served as a repository of knowledge, chronicling the ancient and contemporary stories of the Umpqua River Valley. From the snowcapped peaks of Mt. Thielsen to the crashing surf of the Pacific Ocean in Winchester Bay, the museum celebrates the region's remarkable landscape and cultural heritage. Of particular interest is the limited-time exhibit, "The Archie Creek Fire," which vividly recounts the devastating wildfire that swept through Glide in September 2020. Through film interviews, live-recorded videos, drone footage, photographs, and artifacts, visitors can witness the harrowing experiences of community members and the heroic efforts to combat the blaze. In addition to the Archie Creek Fire exhibit, visitors can explore the "Pioneer History of Wine," which highlights the local viticulture that has put the Umpqua Valley on the global wine map. Conveniently located off I-5 Exit 123, the Douglas County Museum of History & Natural History is situated at 123 Museum Drive in Roseburg, Oregon, adjacent to the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Admission prices range from free for members and children ages 0-4 to $8.00 for adults. Commissioner Tom Kress expressed excitement about the extended hours, encouraging residents to take advantage of the opportunity to visit the museum. He urged families to add the museum to their Sunday drives or road trip itineraries, promising an enriching experience for all.
