DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. — In celebration of National Fairgrounds Appreciation Month, Douglas County Commissioners Chris Boice, Tim Freeman, and Tom Kress are highlighting the multifaceted offerings of the Douglas County Fairgrounds Complex. Beyond its association with the annual fair, the fairgrounds serve as a hub for community engagement, entertainment, and support services year-round.

Commissioner Tom Kress emphasized the significance of the fairgrounds, stating, "Our Douglas County Fairgrounds Complex is one of our most valuable and underappreciated County assets." He underscored the diverse range of events and opportunities available, urging residents to take advantage of them.

The fairgrounds host an array of events annually, attracting thousands of visitors. These events encompass a wide spectrum, including the Christmas Craft Fair, Challenge of Champions Bull Riding Series, Father Daughter Dance, and many more. Additionally, the fairgrounds have played a crucial role in supporting the community during crises, serving as venues for various operations and clinics, including COVID testing and vaccination efforts.

Spanning across 74 acres, the fairgrounds complex comprises six community buildings, three animal boarding barns, a dirt track speedway, amphitheater, outdoor pavilions, parks, and RV facilities. Notably, unlike most fairground complexes in the Pacific Northwest, the Douglas County Fairgrounds Complex remains open year-round for event rentals.

The history of the fairgrounds dates back to 1860, with the first recorded fair held in Oakland. Over the years, the fair evolved and eventually found a permanent home in the present location, thanks to community support and initiatives led by local organizations and businesses.

Reflecting on the fairgrounds' deep roots in the community, Commissioner Kress emphasized its inclusivity, stating, "The Douglas County Fairground’s roots really do run deep in our community, and they are absolutely grounds for everyone."
