A disaster declaration has been issued for Collin County in response to the damage sustained throughout the area by an unconfirmed F3 tornado that struck Saturday night.

The declaration was made by Collin County Judge Chris Hill in response to the “extensive damage” caused in and near the city of Celina, according to a press release.

“I am heartbroken from the reports of devastation sustained by our friends and neighbors in Collin County last night,” Hill said in the release. “Our teams from Collin County, Celina, and partnering agencies worked throughout the night and will continue working throughout the day to clear the debris from roadways and to assess the damage to homes.”

The storm left 15,000 county residences without power due to downed power lines, and as of 11 a.m., more than 2,100 were still in the dark.

Several homes were completely destroyed by the storm. But, according to preliminary reports, there were only “limited injuries and no fatalities.”

One family was reportedly trapped in their home, but neighbors and first responders were able to rescue them during the night.

The Celina Fire Department responded immediately, searching homes and assisting residents.

Now, Hill says he is working to ensure that “every resource available” is being used to assist those who suffered the greatest losses.

“Most of all, we are immensely grateful that there have been no reported fatalities,” Hill said. “I am thankful for all of our first responders who acted swiftly as the calls came in throughout the night.”

Those in need of immediate assistance are being directed to contact GraceBridge for assistance. The nonprofit is also accepting donations to help those affected.
