(FOX40.COM) — A jogger in Tuolumne County had a near-death encounter with a mother bear on Monday, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The 24-year-old man was jogging along North Fork Road in Long Barn at around 5 p.m. when he spotted a bear cub and its mother on the side of the road.

After being chased up an embankment by the mother bear, the man picked up a stick and began hitting the bear on the head while he tried to hide from the bear behind a tree.

As the bear charged at him again, the man ran to a nearby vehicle and climbed on top while the bear continued to chase and attack him.

The man was struck in the legs, back and side of his torso as he was standing on top of the vehicle.

Hearing the violent event, the owner of the home where the car was parked saw the man out front with the bear nearby.

The homeowner yelled at the bear and made noises to scare off the bear.

After calling first responders, the man was transported by ambulance to Adventist Health in Sonora where he was treated for his injuries. He was last reported to be in stable condition.
