(KRON) — A Northern California woman was mauled to death by dogs before sheriff’s deputies rounded up 23 Great Danes that were running loose in her neighborhood.

Davina Corbin, 56, of Feather Falls, Calif., died on Blackhawk Trail near where dozens of domestic Great Danes were roaming, according to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office. In the early morning hours of August 8, a resident found Corbin’s body riddled with bite marks and called 911.

A forensic pathologist performed an autopsy on the victim. Sheriff’s officials wrote, “The forensic pathologist located numerous bite marks and injuries,” and concluded that her cause of death was “attributed to a domestic dog attack.”

Detectives served a search warrant at a house located next where the woman was found dead. Twenty-five Great Danes were running loose nearby, investigators said.

Deputies and detectives “spent the entire day capturing the dogs, who were running loose in the area. To date, approximately 23 dogs have been captured and turned over to animal control. Detectives are currently attempting to capture the two outstanding dogs,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote.

Investigators said they found evidence showing Corbin was walking on the trail when she was attacked. Domestic dog DNA was found on clothing that the victim was wearing. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife sent the clothing to a lab for DNA analysis to determine which dogs attacked Corbin.

Great Danes are one of the largest dog breeds. The American Kennel Club writes, “Owning a dog of such imposing size, weight, and strength is a commitment not to be entered into lightly. Danes tower over most other dogs, and when standing on their hind legs, they are taller than most people. Despite their sweet nature, Danes are alert home guardians.”
