Homeless man arrested for homicide in Pittsburg

(KRON) — A man was suffering from “significant facial trauma” when he died along Railroad Avenue in Pittsburg on Tuesday, according to police. Detectives are investigating his death as a homicide.

Emergency 911 dispatchers told police that a physical altercation broke out between two men on Railroad Avenue at 6:37 a.m. Tuesday. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim and several witnesses.

“Multiple witnesses on scene provided a description of the suspect which matched video evidence collected from local businesses. Officers conducted a canvas of the area and quickly located the suspect,” the Pittsburg Police Department wrote.

Police identified the suspect as a 28-year-old homeless man, Billy Ray Darby Jr.

Investigators said Darby was booked into a Contra Costa County jail on suspicion of homicide. “Detectives are actively investigating what led to the altercation,” PPD wrote.

The police department did not release the victim’s name on Thursday.
