    Judge sets trial date for man accused of shooting during Española protest

    ESPAÑOLA, N.M. (KRQE) – A man accused of attempted murder after opening fire at a protest last year and injuring a man will go to trial in October. Ryan Martinez is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and reckless driving. He’s accused of shooting Jacob Johns in September 2023 during a protest against the Onate statue outside of the Rio Arriba County Annex.

    Judge Jason Lidyard held a pretrial hearing on Monday morning. Martinez’s trial is set to begin on October 7. It’s scheduled to last a week.
