CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – The second trial against a woman charged for the overdose death of her grandson has begun. Kelli Smith was charged with child abuse resulting in death after police found her grandson, 12-year-old Brent Sullivan, unresponsive in her shed in September 2021. Investigators believe Smith and the boy’s mother, Alexis Smith, were selling drugs and that the preteen took drugs from their stash.
