ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – When the Lobo football team’s first official depth chart was revealed ahead of Saturday’s season opener against Montana State, three running backs were listed as a potential starter. Beginning with junior transfer Eli Sanders, both Naquari Rogers and Andrew Henry were also listed under the “or” category.

Sanders, in his first season at UNM after transferring from Iowa State, is now slated to carry the rock after a season where he finished with 477 yards and four touchdowns before going down with injury. Now, Sanders is looking to follow in the footsteps of his senior mentor from his freshman season, New York Jets running back Breece Hall.

“You know, what I learned on and off the field from him I just took it with me and ran,” said Sanders. “I took it with me and was grateful that he taught me those ways and I couldn’t ask for a better leader, straight through college, straight out of high school to just look up too. So, I’m very grateful for that.”

As for his playing style, Sanders said that he views himself more as a shifty type of runner.

“I’m going to find a hole, I’m going to hit it as fast as I can, as hard as I can. I’m looking to just make one guy miss and just use my speed for the rest.”

Sanders and the Lobos open the season on Saturday against Montana State. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on FS1.
