NMSP says around 9:30 p.m. Santa Fe police were sent to the Smith’s grocery store on Cerrillos after getting reports that 41-year-old Jesus Rafael Contreras was suicidal and armed with a gun. Police arrived on scene and could not locate Contreras, who told dispatchers he was parked at a Denny’s in the area. Police located Contreras’ vehicle and initiated a traffic stop as he was driving into the Denny’s. Contreras then stopped his car at an Allsup’s at 3000 Cerrillos Rd.

Police say commands were given to Contreras to get out of the vehicle unarmed. Contreras exited the vehicle while armed with a gun. Police say at least one officer fired their weapon at Contreras, striking him. Contreras was taken to the hospital to be treated for his wounds. Contreras was arrested and charged by SFPD.
