BELEN, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) said there was an officer-involved shooting on Saturday. It involved the Belen Police Department, they said.

According to NMSP, Belen officers were alerted to a suspicious vehicle parked on the train track on Jarales Road. The truck was reported stolen out of Albuquerque.

A bystander allegedly told police they saw two men on a blue four-wheeler near the truck. Officers found the ATV and men at a Belen gas station. When officials tried to conduct a traffic stop on the ATV, they fled.

Authorities followed the men and one allegedly fired shots at the police. An officer discharged his weapon. A different officer made contact with the ATV, and his patrol unit became “disabled.” No officers were reported to have any injuries.

The ATV fled the scene, and the suspects were not identified.

If anyone has information, they’re asked to call authorities at 505-841-9256 option 1.
