WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A 21-year-old Neosho County Community College student drowned on Saturday in the Neosho River.

The Neosho County Sheriff’s Office says that around 6 p.m., sheriff’s deputies, the Chanute Fire Department, and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks were dispatched to Detners Dam, 207th Road and Grady.

Officials say the international student from Fiji had been swimming with friends when he jumped off the dam, became caught in a current, and drowned.
