    John Manard, murderer who escaped Kansas prison in 2006, dies

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) — The man who escaped Lansing Correctional Institution in a dog crate 18 years ago has died in an out-of-state prison.

    John Manard had been in a prison outside of Kansas for the last seven years.

    The Kansas Department of Corrections listed him as having died on Sunday, Aug. 25.

    Wichita man sentenced in 2023 homicide of 16-year-old Elrecus Nolan Jr.

    Manard was serving a life sentence for a deadly carjacking in 1996. But in 2006, while in a prison dog training program, Manard convinced a trainer named Toby Young to carry him out in a dog crate .

    The two were on the run for several days and lived in a cabin in Tennessee before a chase topping 100 mph ended with the couple smashing into a tree. Young was sentenced to 27 months in prison for aiding the escape.

    Kansas sent Manard to a facility out of the state in 2017.
