MANHATTAN, Kan. (KSNW) — The Riley County Police Department says it continues to investigate after a young woman from the Wichita area was injured early Friday in Manhattan. The woman was rushed to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka.

Friends have said the woman was with them in Aggieville late Thursday, but they became separated as they were leaving.

The Riley County Police Department said the woman was walking home and was communicating with her friends until 2:13 a.m. Friday. But something happened, and she was found injured in the 800 block of Laramie , a few blocks east of Aggieville. The call to 911 came in around 2:30 a.m.

While friends and family have said the woman was assaulted, the Riley County Police Department did not use that word in its news release. It said it is investigating an incident.

“We are currently reviewing surveillance footage from Aggieville and surrounding areas and are following up on any leads to determine the cause of these injuries,” police said in a news release Tuesday morning.

Ashley Tokoi, a police spokesperson, said police are aware of a social media message that has been circulating, but she said it includes some misinformation.

“We understand the concerns that have been raised on social media regarding the safety of our community,” the news release said. “It is important to note that based on the information available at this time, there is no evidence to suggest there is an ongoing threat to the public. While we take all reports seriously, it is critical to rely on verified information rather than speculation.”

The police department is asking the community to give officers time to thoroughly investigate what happened.

If you have any tips that could help police, call 785-537-2112 . If you want to remain anonymous, call Riley County Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
