TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – A 28-year-old Topeka man was arrested along the Shunga Trail after an alleged assault. The arrest adds to a violent year-and-a-half-long history along the trail.

At 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, the Topeka Police Department (TPD) responded to reports of an assault on the Shunga Trail near Southeast Second and Golden Avenue.

The victim told police they were battered by someone unknown to them. Police found and identified a 28-year-old Topeka man in connection to the crime. The 28-year-old was arrested on a charge of intentional battery or recklessly causing bodily harm, according to the TPD.

Last year, a couple of violent incidents around the trail prompted a local bicycle club to issue a warning to members to stop using the Shunga and Landon Trails.

On June 15, 2023, Kim Teske, a member of the Kaw Valley Bicycle Club, was attacked by an off-leash dog. Teske was able to escape from the dog and call 911 but had to wait for more than an hour for help to arrive. The bite led to an infection, multiple weeks of antibiotics and severe pain and swelling.

In total, Arteaga was sentenced to 182 months in prison with credit for time served. He must register as an offender, he is prohibited from carrying a firearm and must be under lifetime post-release supervision.

On Monday, April 1 Arteaga was sentenced to:

    • Attempted Rape – 89 months in prison
