    Firefighters rescue person trapped beneath tree in the Kansas River during violent storm

    TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – Fire crews in Topeka helped rescue a person trapped beneath a tree in the Kansas River Wednesday night amid a dangerous thunderstorm.

    Rosie Nichols with the City of Topeka said in a press release that firefighters with the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) were called around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 14 to the 1100 block of NE Poplar Street on reports of an injured individual in the Kansas River. The TFD’s Technical Rescue team took up the call and responded to the incident.

    Multiple fire crews were sent to assist with the rescue. Firefighters at the scene found a person who was injured and stuck beneath a fallen tree from the storm. This person was rescued and taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

    Violent storms on Wednesday, Aug. 14 caused extensive damage in parts of northeast Kansas, including knocking down numerous trees and power lines. Many are without power in cities like Topeka, Newton, Leavenworth and Wichita, according to reports from Evergy.
