    Police chase goes through Forbes National Guard Base, ends in blaze

    TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – On Monday, a high-speed pursuit ended with a Topeka man in custody and a car in a blaze.

    At 2:15 a.m., police officers with the Topeka Police Department attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle near 21st Street and South Kansas Avenue. According to the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, the driver took off at high speeds.

    The Sheriff’s Office said the driver was swerving into both lanes of traffic. Around 53rd Street and Southeast Adams Steet, the pursuing officers disengaged.

    Once the sheriff’s office was aware of the pursuit they responded to provide assistance. At 2:20 a.m. a deputy saw the suspected vehicle at Forbes Field Air National Guard base and tried to stop the vehicle. The chase ended in the 2800 block of South Kansas Avenue, according to the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office.

    The Topeka Fire Department had to respond to the scene for a vehicle fire after the chase was done.

    The 29-year-old driver from Topeka was booked on the following charges:

    • Aggravated kidnapping
    • Flee or attempt to elude; Commission of any felony
    • Interference with LEO; obstruct/resist/oppose felony warrant
    • Criminal trespass; Property as posted per KSA 32-1013
    • Criminal damage to property; Misdemeanor
    • Fail to stop for a red traffic control x3
    • Turn signal must be used at least 100’ prior to move
    • Driving in opposite direction on a divided highway
    • Improper turn or approach
    • Improper driving on laned roadway
    • Headlamps on vehicle must be equipped with two
    • Reckless driving; 1st conviction
    • Speeding; maximum limits
    • Operate a motor vehicle without a valid license
    • Vehicle liability insurance; Liability coverage required
    • Vehicles; Operate vehicle without registration or with expired tag
    • Yield emergency vehicle; approaching vehicle
    • Felony flee or attempt to elude
    • Driving the wrong direction on a one-way roadway
    • Disobeying traffic control device
    • Failure to comply with construction zone restrictions
    • Driving without lights when needed
    • Operating a motor vehicle without a valid license
