MANHATTAN ( KSNT ) – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of a Riley County Jail inmate on Monday.

The Riley County Police Department (RCPD) announced in a press release on Tuesday, Sept. 3 the death of 51-year-old Michael Smith of Manhattan. Emergency medical service workers responded to the jail around 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 2 after jail staff found Smith unresponsive in his cell.

They immediately administered CPR but their efforts were unsuccessful. Smith’s relatives received notification of his death.

The KBI is investigating the death per state law and department policy. The KBI investigates all deaths which occur in state prisons and jails unless the inmate who dies is being regularly attended by a physician or the death is ruled natural via an autopsy.
